Robin Hood
The story of Robin Hood, the most popular English folk hero of all times, has reached every corner of the Earth. There are many versions of this well-known tale which is about 600 years old. Everybody knows Robin’s friends (Little John, Brother Tuck, Will Scarlet), and the famous Sherwood Forest — Robin Hood’s home and the place where many of his adventures took place. In other countries there are similar stories, such as William Tell in Switzerland, El Cid in Spain or Janosik in Poland, but only Robin Hood has become an ‘international’ hero.

Unfortunately, there is almost no evidence that Robin Hood really existed. Thirteenth-century ballads, fourteenth-century chronicles, a sixteenth-century History of Great Britain, all talk about Robin Hood. However, none of them tells us about the sources they used. In the 1800s and 1900s, historians found two Robin Hoods who lived in the fourteenth century. One of them was even King Edward II’s servant. Later on, other historians found several different Hoods living in different parts of England – Robin was a popular Christian name and Hood was a fairly common surname. It seems that by 1337, the story of Robin Hood was well established. Most probably, he lived around the year 1200.

Today, the legend of Robin Hood has turned Nottinghamshire into a large tourist attraction. In the centre of Nottingham there is Nottingham Castle. Parts of it still recall the time of Robin Hood. Sherwood forest has an excellent visitor’s centre with an attractive display and shop, and some very pleasant walks in the nearby forest. Edwinstowe church, in which, according to tradition, Robin Hood and Lady Marion were married, is one of the visitors’ favourite sites.

  1. John Henry Anderson was a Scottish magician who performed in Europe and the United States in the early 19th century. His favourite trick was bullet-catching, but his best remembered for pulling a rabbit from a hat. He didn’t think of the trick first, but he made it popular and there have been variations on it ever since.

  2. Robert Houdin was born in France in 1805. He was originally trained as a clockmaker. He first appeared as a magician in Paris in 1845. He used common objects to create illusions rather than complicated pieces of machinery. He was known as the father of magic and it was from him that Harry Houdini took his name years later.

  3. Howard Thurston was from Ohio. He started by touring and doing card tricks. In 1908 he met the magician, Harry Kellar. Kellar sold him his tricks and Thurston turned them into a 3-hour long magic show. He toured with it for over 20 years. He was well-known for illusions such as the “floating lady”.

  4. Harry Houdini was born Erik Weisz in Budapest, Hungary. Before taking up magic, he worked in a circus. His world-wide fame came from his amazing escapes. One of his most incredible escapes was from a box that was locked, roped, weighted then lowered into water. Late in his career he went to Hollywood and made films, performing his own stunts.

  5. David Copperfield was born in 1956 in America. He began performing at the age of twelve. He is noted for his ability to make objects disappear, something he has done frequently whilst on the air, watched by millions. He once made the Statue of Liberty, America’s most famous landmark disappear. He also walked through the Great Wall of China. From the late 1970s, he was on TV in The Magic Show of David Copperfield.

Mobile phones: here to stay

Most people today cannot imagine their life without a mobile phone. I believe it is one of the most important

innovations ever. Thanks to mobile phones, our lives are much easier today.

First of all, if you have a mobile phone you can make phone calls no matter where you are. For example, you

can call a friend to let them know that you lost your way or are going to be late. As a result, you feel safer and

less stressed.

In addition, we can use mobile phones to send text messages. We can write messages to friends giving them news

or sending them birthday wishes. We can even listen to the radio while travelling on a bus or the metro.

However, some people would argue that it has a negative effect on our life. If we use mobile phones all the

time, it is bad for our health.

In my opinion, mobile phones have more advantages than disadvantages if we use them correctly. Our lives

are better with them and they are here to stay.

1. Most people nowadays _______.

A cannot live without mobile phones.

B imagine life without mobile phones.

C live without mobile phones.

2. Thanks to mobile phones, our lives have become _______.

A simpler.

B more exciting.

C more complicated.

3. One of the advantages of mobile phones is that _______.

A they play music.

B they are cheap.

C they let us call people wherever we are.

4. Mobile phones are also used to _______.

A send wishes.

B send letters.

C send bills.

5. The main disadvantage of mobile phones is that _______.

A they are expensive.

B they are bad for our health.

C they create stress.

I often go diving – we`ve got some great places for that in Australia, you know. And I love going climbing in the mountains. I`d love to go to the Himalayas one day. Ah one more thing … I go jogging a lot. Nearly every day. I go to the beach near my house, it`s a great place for jogging.

Matt: Er, I live right in the middle of London. I`m at London University, studying information technology. I don`t have many classes because I`m in my last year but I study a lot. In my free time … well, I like watching TV, or surfing the Net. I`ve got friends all over the world and we chat. I play chess on the Net, too. Big Jim

Mike was proud to wear the uniform of a bus driver. He felt good when he helped people. And he liked driving all around the town and the countryside. He wasn`t a big man, but he was one of the best bus drivers in the city.

One day, Mike went to the bus station as usual. As always, he started his bus but drove along his usual way. For the first few stops, everything was normal. A few people got on his bus. Mike took their money and gave them their tickets. A few people got off the bus. Then, when Mike got to the bus stop on Elm Road, a huge man was waiting for the bus. The man was tall and his long arms were full of muscles. He stepped up onto the bus. He looked at Mike and said, `I`m Big Jim. Big Jim doesn`t pay.` Then he sat at the back of the bus. Mike was surprised about this, and he was also upset. But Jim was so big, Mike wasn`t sure what to do.

The next day, Big Jim was again waiting at the Elm Road stop. Again he got on the bus and said, `Big Jim doesn`t pay.` It happened this way every day for several days. Mike continued to be unhappy about this situation. Jim could be dangerous. What would happen if Mike tried to make him pay? Then Mike had an idea. He started going to the gym. He lifted weights. He took a class in boxing. He started running every day for exercise. After a few weeks, Mike had become very fit and strong. He felt confident.

Mike was ready. He knew what to do. He stood up. He looked Big Jim in the eye. He said, `Why doesn`t Big Jim pay?`

Big Jim had a surprised look on his face. Then he reached in his pocket, pulled out a small card, and said, `Because Big Jim has got a six-month bus pass.`
