There are several legend about St. Valentine’s Day. One of the legends says that Valentine was Christian priest who lived in the 3 century A.D. He was put into prison for his teachings and was beheaded on February 14. According to the legend he performed a miracle — he cured his jailer‘s daughter of her blindness. Before the execution he wrote her a letter signed «From Your Valentine». Another legend says that the same Valentine wrote to children and friends who loved him from the jail.

According to another legend, Valentine was an Italian bishop who lived at about the same time. He was thrown into prison because he secretly married couples, contrary to the laws of the Roman empire. The legend says that he was burnt at the stake.

February 14 was also a Roman holiday. On this day young men randomly chose the name of the girl

to escort to the festival. The custom of choosing a sweetheart on this day became very popular in the medieval Europe. Later this custom spread to American colonies.

Now, St. Valentine’s Day is the day of sweethearts. On this day, people show their friends relatives and loved ones that they care. People send candy or flowers to those whom they love. Most people send «valentines», greeting cards named after St. Valentine’s letters written from jail. Valentines can be sentimental and romantic, or funny and friendly. Valentines can be anonymous. Valentines can be heart-shaped or can carry hearts on them. People buy valentines or make them themselves.

Saint Valentine’s Day , commonly known as  Valentine’s Day  is observed on February 14 each year.

It is celebrated in many countries around the world, though it remains a working day in most of them. It is the second most celebrated holiday around the world second to New Year’s Day.

There are various popular and interesting legends of St Valentine’s Day.

One legend says that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome.

When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those married, he outlawed marriage for young men.

Valentine continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.

When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Now Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death, which probably occurred around 270 A.D.

According to another legend, Valentine actually sent the first ‘valentine’ greeting himself.

While in prison, Valentine fell in love with a young girl, his jailor’s daughter, who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, he wrote her a letter, which he signed ‘From your Valentine’ , an expression that is still in use today.

Legends usually says that Valentine was a sympathetic, heroic, and romantic person. In the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

Popularity of the festival is perhaps due to the combined effect of all these legends along with the notion that spring is the time for love.

Now, St. Valentine’s Day is the day of all sweethearts. On this day, people send presents or flowers to those whom they love. Most people send «valentines», greeting cards, named after St. Valentine’s letters written in the jail.

Valentines can be sentimental and romantic, or funny and friendly. Valentines can be anonymous. Valentines can be heart-shaped. People buy valentines or make them themselves.

St Valentine’s Day    It is a very sentimental unofficial holiday, which is celebrated on the 14th February by those who believe in love and friendship. Boys and girls, husbands and wives, just friends send nice cards to each other with warm greetings on the day. No one can trace origin of this European tradition, but the legend tells us a story of an Italian monk Valentine who helped young people to marry breaching thus the ruler’s law. St Valentine was executed but people still remember him and celebrate this saint’s day as a day of love.   The best presents are small trifles, chocolates and greeting cards. The words are simple and touching like these ones: I’ll be your sweetheart If you will be mine, All of my life I’ll be your Valentine.

These cute little heart shaped baskets are filled with small candies and hung on the tree in Norway at Christmas time but we use them as cute little Valentine’s hearts.  Slip a message or small candies inside the pocket of your woven heart and give it to someone special! Materials: two different colors of paper (gift wrap or construction paper both work) scissors
Norwegian Woven Hearts

Слайд 13

Instructions: Stack the two pieces of paper on top of one another and fold them in half. Cut a large U shape (so the straight part of the U is at the fold)   Unfold and make sure they look right. Refold and hold in a heart shape to ensure you’re happy with the shape.  Trim a bit if needed. While still folded and stacked together, cut two slits starting at straight edge running about 2/3 of the way up the U shape To sort out how far up to cut, imagine your U shape is a square with a half circle on top.  Cut up to where the half circle starts Now it gets a bit complicated: Take the red and «open» the top loop. Take the white and stick the first end down inside the top red loop.   Now (on the same end) open the white loop and stick the second red loop partially through.   Stick the white end through the last red loop.  Keep weaving the loops together to form the heart shape Fill with candy and and a note to a loved one — you can punch holes and lace a ribbon through, tying a bow to hold the candies in if you like

St. Valentine’s Day

  1. The history of the holiday

Today we celebrate one of the best holidays, which young and old people love. It is St. Valentine’s Day.

  • St. Valentine’s Day is a religious holiday, which is celebrated in Great Britain, in many European countries and in the USA. St. Valentine’s Day has roots in several  legends. One of the early symbols of love is Cupidе, the Roman God of Love, who is represented by the image of a young boy with bow and arrow. Valentine was a Christian priest in Roman Empire three hundred years after the death of Jesus Christ. He had been thrown in prison for his teaching. On February 14, Valentine was beheaded, not only because he performed a miracle – he cured the jailer’s daughter from her blindness the night before he was executed – but he wrote a letter to the girl, signing «From your Valentine».
