Lord Byron was an aristocrat and a fashionable man. His personality attracted Britain and all Europe. He brought to his poetry romanticism of his times. He was talented and handsome, noble and brave. George Gordon Byron was born on January 22nd 1788. He spent his early years outside the capital. He lived in the north. Later his mother took him to Aberdeen. There they lived for several years. George went to Aberdeen Grammar School and there is a monument to him outside the school. Later he studied at Harrow School and Cambridge University. When Byron was 19, he came to London. One day the poet wrote, “I woke up and found myself famous”. It happened after the publication of his autobiographic poem “Childe Harold” in 1812. In summer of 1816 Byron left Britain forever. He travelled around Europe and soon he became a member of the Greek liberation movement, for which he died. But he did not lead the Greeks in battle as he wished. He died of fever.

Listening

I went to the cinema last week and laughed all the way through the new film “Waiter!” which is set in a restaurant. The American actor Tom Waters plays the worst cook the world has ever seen and he employs one of the worst waiters, played by Joe Vermont.

The London restaurant where the filming took place does actually exist (существует) .Jane Connors, the owner, runs a successful business and, although she thinks “Waiter!” is a good film, she is very annoyed with the director. When she agreed to the filming, she wasn’t told that the film is about a restaurant where everything goes wrong and the food is disgusting. (отвратительная) Although the film might make Jane’s restaurant famous if it is a success, she is afraid that people will stop coming because they will think that the food and service is terrible-like it is in the film. Jane is worried she will lose business and may even have to close and start again with a new restaurant.

Having seen the film, I agree that she has a problem. The film company paid her a very small fee (гонорар) and she has since asked for more. The best solution though is for her to contact the newspapers. I am sure they will be interested in her story and it will actually help her business in the end.

Healthy Food

Eating is fun, especially when you are hungry. Most people have a favorite food. Some people enjoy eating sweet things like cakes, chocolates and ice cream. Other people enjoy savory foods like cheese and meet. Enjoying eating is our body’s way of making sure that is gets the things it needs to work properly. Food helps us to keep warm, talk, run and do all the other things we do. It helps us to grow and stay healthy.

Vitamins also help us to be healthy. Scientists name vitamins after the alphabet. All of them are very important, for example: vitamin C keeps our skin and gums healthy. It is found in fresh fruit and green vegetables, such as oranges, blackcurrants, lettuce. Brussels sprouts and spinach also contain a lot of vitamin C. Vitamin D helps our bones to grow strong and hard, and we are able to make it for ourselves if our skin gets enough sunlight. But we can also get vitamin D if we eat fish, milk, butter, cheese and margarine. Some people buy pills and tablets containing vitamins. But most of us get more than enough of them from our food.

  1. Are the sentences true (T) or false (F)?

  1. When we enjoy eating our body gets everything to work well. ______

1 Read the text. For questions 1 -5 choose the correct answer A, B, C or D.

When Sebastian was a boy at school, his favourite lesson was art, and he won several prizes for it. Once he left school, he got a position as a clerk in a bank, but three times a week he went to evening classes in art, and whenever he had time at the weekends, he painted.

He painted in a very modern manner – mysterious objects and shapes, women with three pink eyes, large blank areas, and so on.

After a few months he thought, “Perhaps I call sell some of my pictures and get enough money to afford to leave the bank and became a real artist. Then I can travel around as much as I like, and go to foreign museums, and see other artists ‘paintings, and study in other countries when I feel like it. Though I try to make the best of the job and I don’t regard the work as difficult – at least not at present – I don’t like life in a bank. I only enjoy painting”.

In the bank, Sebastian sometimes had to deal with a man who owned a picture shop, and after he had had a few conversations with him, Sebastian invited him to his home one evening to see some of his works. “Then perhaps you could tell me whether I can really be a good artist and get some money from my painting,” Sebastian said hopefully.

The man said he was prepared to come and see what he thought of Sebastian’ work, so he arrived one evening at Sebastian’s home. Sebastian took the man to his studio and started to show him some of his pictures, with some pride and hope.

The man looked at them one after the other while Sebastian watched his face, but to Sebastian’s disappointment the man did not say anything, and his expression did not change at any of them either.

Then, when he had finished, he looked around, and his glance fell on something else. A happy look came over his face for the first time, and he said, “Now I like this one very much! It’s so full of deep feeling! I’m sure I could sell this one for you.

“That,”said Sebastian, “is the place where I clean the paint off my brushes”.
