Homeless animals
Kaluzhane like animals very much. Pets: dogs, cats, horses, ducks, canaries, chickens and other friends of men have a much better life in Kaluga region, than anywhere else. In Kaluga region they have special dog shops selling food, clothes and other things for dogs. There are dog hair-dressing saloons and dog cemeteries. Kaluzhane arrange dog’s shows and organize dogs’ supper parties for winners of dogs’ competitions. They do all they can to make animals feel well in their home and outside their houses too.
Every year thousands of animals arrive at Kaluga Airport, some stay the night there; others stay several weeks. In one month, for example, special staff looked after 30 000 creatures: birds, insects, fish, monkeys and other animals. All animals have special treatment so that their owners may not worry about them while they are away. Kaluzhane believe that they are the only people on the Russian Federation that is really kind to its animals.
In Kaluga region people have always loved animals. Kaluga region was the first area to create a society to protect animals in 1826. The society doesn’t exist today, but there is the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and it is called “ The New ark”. It finds new owners for 50 000 homeless animals every year. Besides, “The New ark” organizes different public events and is involved in lots of activities in the sphere of protecting animals’ rights. “The New ark” also provided charity support to animal shelters.
Today, half of the households in Kaluga region have a pet. Cats are especially popular because many people who live alone and go to work like independent pets. Other popular pets are dogs, birds, rabbits, fish, guinea-pigs and hamsters. However, in recent years Kaluzhane began to show love for more exotic animals. You can come across such exotic pets as crocodiles, spiders, cobras and lizards.
Strays are animals without owners or homes. Some of the strays have simply lost their owners but in other cases their owners have abandoned them, especially in the case of dogs. People often get tired of pets when they get too big or make a mess. Especially at the New Year, when people buy cats and dogs as “cute presents” but then they are too lazy to take care for the animals and turn them out. “The New ark” tries to find owners for these animals.
The hospital helps animal owners who pay expensive vets’ bills. Man of the owners are old or live alone with their pets. All the nurses have to do a two-year course before they can work there. They need to learn to give an anesthetic, do X-rays and put on bandages. It’s not easy when you have to put a bandage on a rabbit’s broken legs or an owl’s wing. The nurses agree that the best part of the job is the satisfaction when the animal recovers and the owners are happy.
For many years, animals have been taken for granted and always being used for the benefit. Animals have proved to be an easy target for circuses, poaching, hunting, testing and fashion purposes. Animal rights group “The New ark” has achieved much success raising awareness and keeping the issues in the public eye. Some bans on drug or cosmetic testing on animals have been implemented and even elk-hunting has been banned by the Kaluga region government.

The First Day in Kaluga.
I wish to give you a look at the first day or two in Kaluga as seen through the eyes of a young visitor to the region on a temporary student visa. For most visitors, the first taste of Kaluga is touchdown at Kaluga Airport which is only a 1000 rubles’ taxi fare from the heart of the city. As soon as on gets off the plane, the busy, commercial atmosphere of Kaluga immediately becomes apparent. The traffic is not dense, and moves fast. The buildings are old and the weather is usually cloudy. Many students arrange to stay with an Kaluga citizen’s family while they study at the State University in Kaluga and other colleges and are therefore met at the airport.
Having met the family and settled into his or her new home – most families in the city live in semi-detached houses — a visitor is usually tired after the trip and takes a day or two to recover from jet lag. But it isn’t long before the desire to look around and discover the sights and sounds of Kaluga overcomes the shock of being in a foreign country. The second on the list is a trip to the University chosen while overseas as the place to study English in Kaluga region.
Most colleges are located close to the city and are surprisingly modern and welcoming. They are always within easy travel distance of a bus route or a trolleybus route, and the buses are modern and comfortable, although it is more expensive. than taking a taxi.
Most commuters to the city prefer the trolleybus because they are extensive and much faster and cheaper.
On intake day, students gather in the common room of their chosen faculty or college and are given an orientation to the program they are about to embark upon. After they have been welcomed to the college or faculty and know a little more about how the school works, it is time to take a short test to determine the best class for them to begin their studies.
Come lunchtime, of course, it is necessary to find a place to eat. Some students sensibly bring their own lunch or else find a café nearby that suits their place? Of course, Kaluga has a vast number of cafes and restaurants at which one can choose food from countries all over the world, and prices are generally quite acceptable.
In the afternoon a student usually discovers that the way in which the language is taught in a Russian environment is different to what they are used to in their home country. Some students might be surprised at the difference in a teaching methods. Students in Kaluga colleges and the State University are always treated as adults and the ones to perform is therefore on the student. Attending their first lesson of the course, they meet their classmates for the next few weeks. It is time to get to know each other and the opportunity for an exchange of personal information. After class, students make their way to home, enlightened and sometimes a little confused about what is expected of them. But most agree that the experience they have got on their first day of college is worth all the hardship of leaving the comfort of home.
10 Most visitors to Kaluga arrive at Kaluga Airport.

Now we are ready to start.
Speaker A
Am I happy where I live now? I am. It’s because my town Kaluga is modern and beautiful. It’s very comfortable. I can do whatever I want. The neighbourhood is smart, citizens are nice and it actually is very convenient because there are many stores, cinemas and restaurants around. Buses always run on time. I really like it.
Speaker B
I’m not happy where I live at all. I’m terrified to go home at night because of the hooligans and the drug dealers. I am afraid of burglars when I am at home. My neighbour’s car was stolen from his garage at night and never found. We also have a big rat problem there are thousands of them in the streets even at daytime. So, I can say there is nothing positive about my hometown.
Speaker C
There’s only one bad thing about my hometown Rusinovo. It’s so far from big cities. So, there’s not much do here. There’s not much entertainment. There are no restaurants or movie theatres, so it’s very quiet. Some people would say very boring, but I think you have to find other things to do like learning to play musical instruments or playing chess. It’s also a good idea to take up writing stories. Living in a small town makes a difference.
Speaker D
Yeah, I’m really happy. I really like the fact that my family are close by and that I have really good friends close by. I know my home town Balabanovo is really small and quiet. I’s a very close – knit community and I like that. It’s not always ideal because there’s not so much to do, but there are a lot of good places to go to. Bright lights of a big city are within an hour’s drive. So really I’m quite fortunate. I do not fancy living in a big city.
Speaker E
Am I happy where I live now? I would have to say “no”. I’m not happy. I live next to a really busy street that has traffic twenty-four hours a day and a hospital just down the block, so I hear sirens every day and it’s one of the busiest and biggest towns in Kaluga region. So I would have to say “no”. it’s too busy and too loud and filled with pollution.
Упражнение 3

Hi Anton. I told Dr. Fedorov that you were under the weather and he gave the details of the net assignment so you can get on with it when you’re feeling better.Anton:
Oh, thanks, Dasha. Another essay?
Dasha:
Actually, it’s not an essay. We’ve got to give a presentation to the rest of the group in Ethnomir in Kaluga region and prepare handouts for them.
Anton:
We? Is it group work?
Dasha:
It’s you, me, Sasha and Misha. It’s a traveling planning project. We’ve got six weeks to do it.
Anton:
So, who’s doing what?
Dasha:
Well, we had a chat and we thought you could help Misha. Misha will do that. He’s good at track planning and navigation. Both Sasha and I have good finding and research information skills.
Anton:
What about arranging when we can meet to check on each other’s progress.
Dasha:
That’s going to be a bit tricky. Sasha won’t be here from next Monday to Saturday as she’s got to have some minor surgery.
Anton:
Nothing to worry about, I hope.
Dasha:
No, it’s just something routine. But Misha will be away at the weerend and won’t be back until Tuesday or even Wednesday. His brother’s getting married and he’s going to be best man.
Anton:
That means neither of them will have much time to be working on our project in the next couple of weeks then.
Dasha:
No, and as we’ll all gave to be studying for our mid-term test as well, I think you and I will be bearing the brunt of the work in theinitial stages, Anton.
Anton:
That’s fair enough Dasha but I hope they’ll pull their weight later. I don’t want you and I to have to do all the work. We’ve got to pass these tests too!
Dasha:
You’re right but I don’t think Sasha and Misha are the type of people to shirk their responsibilities. Anyway. When are we going to have this meeting?
Anton:
What about next Wednesday?
Dasha:
Well. Sasha will be fine by then but Misha isn’t sure if he’ll be back or not so what about the following day, to the certain?
Anton:
Agreed. But where? We all live in different parts of the town so how about the cafe Lozhka?
Dasha:
Don’t you think it would be rater noisy?
Anton:
Not if we meet in the morning. I haven’t got any lectures until 2 o’clock.
Dasha:
None of us has. No, wait, Misha has one at 11 but maybe he could miss that this time and copy up the notes. Let’s say we’ll meet at the café but a bit later, and noon.
Anton:
Good, that’s sorted out. Now, who’s actually going to give the presentation? Sasha has such a quit voice and Misha’s Vologda accent is difficult to listen to.
Dasha:
It’s not that strong! Sometimes I can’t work out what you are saying, Anton!
Anton:
OK. I admit my speech is no that clear. But remember we have a couple of Chinese students in the group. It wouldn’t be fair on them to have to listen to any of us.
Dasha:
We can decide that later. We don’t have to worry about that yet. I’ll have to rush. I’ve got a lecture in 10 minutes. So, get well soon.
Anton:
Thanks, Dasha. We’ll be in touch. Bye.
You have 30 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 30 seconds.)
Now you will listen to the dialogues again. (Repeat.)
This is the end of the task. Now you have 20 seconds to check your answers. (Pause 30 seconds.)

Test 1
Взаимоотношения с друзьями и в школе
Раздел 2 (задания по чтению)
- Variety helps socializing
- The Net socializing
- Negative socializing
- Fears of loneliness
- Socializing dominates education
- Eager to socialize
- Family socializing
- Kids need more socializing
А. Most students that don’t have any friends at school get depressed or something because they feel lonely, down, and that nobody wants to talk to them. They also might get those phobia things, like for instance, being insecure when talking to someone, or people, for one of the “first” times. So therefore, when a teacher calls them, they might feel uncomfortable with answering. They also might have stuff going through their heads and can’t focus on a test, worksheet, or whatever class assignment.
В. In many instances, the failure to socialize may be a key factor in qualifying for special education. It is one of the triad of feature for a diagnosis of autism, for example. Special education has a very strong emphasis on inclusion, which in significant part provides for increased social interaction. Learning how to get by in society is an absolutely key component to education, irrespective of whether it is the subject of a performance test.
С. In order to get through school properly you need to be able to socialize. It is especially important for little children. That’s why in my early childhood education course we are learning that developing ways of having healthy social interactions is so important for children.
D. Various societies have varied socializing skills among their members. It does not mean that one culture is superior to others. It just depends on the way that the civilization under study has progressed. A civilization which has cultivated its young generation with a common set of rules and a uniform educational system is more likely to be at harmony. But on the other hand in the United States of America each minor community brings its culture, its ethnicity and their customs. Having so many socializing influences makes the society more tolerant.
E. My boyfriend used to go out clubbing all the time. But I’m an introvert and I can’t stand that way of easy living. I told him how it made me feel but he says he wants to start going out more, he says socializing is part of his path in life. I asked him what it would be like if we had our own place, he said he would be working all day and then out socializing every night except for the weekends, then he would spend it with me, this is what he would be like if we lived together.
F. Every time I use Myspace, Facebook or Bebo, I have a chance to socialize. I use these websites to talk to old friends and make new friends, but the thing is I never ever get that chance to meet a friend, it would be cool to try that, but I don’t know what socializing websites guarantee that, I would like a safe teen site, where I can meet and make cool mates.
G. There are two types of socializing, depending on the nature of factors that influence them. One is positive when a person learns through good and happy experiences. Parents teaching their kids from their experiences, learning from books or from peers are some example of positive socializing. Positive socializing can take on the form of natural socializing and planned socializing.

I have a problem socializing with girls
I try to follow the rule ‘treat others the way you want to be treated’. But the thing I’ve realized is that a lot less seems to bother me than bothers girls. If a girl told me something like ‘I really like you but you’re in a dead end job and I am accustomed to a more expensive lifestyle therefore I wouldn’t compromise.’ I would just say okay.
I don’t know, but the way I am, I prefer if people tell me the truth like that so at least I know what’s wrong and maybe I can do better next time. However with girls I noticed telling the truth gets me hated. Girls call me rude and everything. I started lying to girls in college recently and I managed to get back relations pretty easily so I can imagine why lots of guys do it.
The interesting thing is the girls seem to suspect that I’m lying but they still smile and go along with it anyway. Telling girls what they want to hear gets me much further than I used to get. I always had difficulty lying to people because of my morals but these results are astonishing. Women always shun me for telling the cold hard truth so I didn’t know what to do. So I just started doing what got results.
A 7 The guy tries to follow his own rule.

Задание С1
Hello Joe,
I am glad to receive your letter as it’s been a long time you wrote to me. You mentioned your new school. It’s nice to have everything new as you have a chance to turn over a new leaf in your life. But remember what ever you do that’ll build your new reputation. You should try to do your best at your studies even if you had problems in your old school.
You have also asked about my school. I go to a day school. We have a class of twenty two pupils and some of them are my friends. I like my school as we have interesting lessons and the teachers are also very professional.
Yours,
Josephina

А. Between December 2003 and December 2005, total TV reach declined but the biggest fall was among young people – it fell by 2.9% for 16 –24 year-olds. During 2005, reach declined by 2.2% in that age group. Reach is defined as at least 15 minutes of consecutive TV viewing in a week. Industry figures say the decline could be due to the growth of the internet. DVDs and gaming could also be factors, they said.
В. Digital Spy is a showbiz, entertainment and digital media community. It is the UK’s largest independent entertainment website generating over 90 million monthly page impressions. Digital Spy is also renowned for its extensive and unique coverage of Big Brother each year. The discussion forums have more than 290,000 registered users and 28.3 million posts.
С. Young people (8–18) devote an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes to using entertainment media across a typical day (more than 53 hours a week), increasing by one hour and seventeen minutes a day over the past five years, according to a new study, Generation M2: Media in the Lives of 8- to 18-Year-Olds, designed and analyzed by the Kaiser Family Foundation and Stanford University researchers.
The increase in media use is driven in large part by ready access to mobile devices like cell phones and iPods. Young people now spend more time listening to music, playing games, and watching TV on their cell phones (a total of 49 min. daily) than they spend talking on them (33 min.).
D. When I plan my parties, I spend time thinking about the menu, the music, the table settings, centerpieces and all the other little details that go into making a wonderful event. But the first thing I really focus on is my guests. After all, that’s the real reason for all the rest. They are usually my friends and I try to do my best to adjust my party to each of our company.
E. He writes a blog, downloads Korean television shows, manages two Web sites devoted to music and plays an online game called Rongguang Hospital, at Baidu.com. “I started doing a lot of this when I was about 11 years old,” says Mr. Li, a freshman at the Shanghai Maritime University. “Now, I spend most of my leisure time on the Internet,” he says. “There’s nowhere else to go.”
F. Additionally, anyone under 18 and out of childhood has severely limited options when it comes to entertainment. Just about everybody has experienced the frustration of being under 18 and having nowhere to go apart from the movies or the zoo. Most young people are interested in popular music, but beyond their TV and radio, there’s very little offered to them. Essentially, any licensed premises are out of bounds which creates an enormous void in popular music options.
G. This survey was done in March 2010 (Term 1), and so it is not surprising that summer Hollywood blockbusters featured in the films listed by students as the most enjoyable film they’d watched recently. The top 5 films were Alice in Wonderland, Avatar, Shutter Island, Valentine’s Day and The Hangover. It is interesting to note that 3 of the top 5 films have unrestricted ratings.

In most ways, Sarah McCarthy is your average high schooler. She has a job, college plans, but also a peculiar passion for a 16-year-old: She’s a vinyl junkie. And none of that hipster new stuff. To this senior high school student, there’s nothing like the raw crackle, the depth of sound, her delicate hand on diamond-tipped stylus to spin from the dusty stash of records she found in the basement of her grandfather.
“He gave me his receiver and speaker system and told me to listen to it the way it was made to be listened to,” McCarthy said. “I’ve turned a lot of my friends on to it. They come over a lot to listen with me.”
At a time when parents feel positively prehistoric as they explain how to use plastic ice-cube trays or speak of phones with cords and dials, this teen knows what a record is. Not only that, she knows the difference between a 45 and an LP. She met her boyfriend in a record shop and now works there.
“Listening to old music remastered to a newer format is almost comical,” Sarah said. “They weren’t meant to be digitalised. Listening to Jimi Hendrix on my iPod doesn’t capture his endlessly deep guitar solos quite like a 33 LP of ‘Blues’ does.”
This girl’s in love with vinyl, and she’s not the only member of Generation Digital with an ear for records.

Задание С1
Hello, Roy.
I am glad to receive a letter from you. As for hostels you are writing about, I think, it is a good way for young people to travel. You are able to save money, meet new friends and spend the best time of your life. If you come up with an idea to go somewhere, you may pack your bag and move on.
I do have friends in other countries. When I travel around Europe visiting them or sightseeing I prefer to stay not in a fashionable hotel, but in a hostel just like you and some of my friends. It looks like a student dormitory where several people live all together in one room.
See you soon,

A However, some people become so insecure because of unfair judgment passed on them based on their appearance, that they actually begin using their appearance as a tool to hide who they really are. That’s unnatural and the person they turn into ends up being quite unlikable to those outside their group most of the time. We were all born the way we were for a reason. Granted, it may be a reason we don’t yet understand, but there is a reason and instead of trying to run from our differences and fit in with everyone else, we should understand who we are. That will bring us that much closer to finding the answer, to why we are the way we are.
B Aries – is mostly of medium height and athletically built. The head and forehead are standing out. Eyebrows are bushy. His temper is fiery. Such person is a ground breaker in everything. He is very active and energetic, prefers to act then think of his deeds. The head injuries may take place.
C With all of the character customization options that you get with Skyrim, it’s easy to go overboard and choose an appearance that seems exciting at first, but that quickly loses its appeal. If you’ve already invested dozens of hours in your character, earned a ton of gold, and completed numerous quests, it’s not surprising if you don’t want to go back and do it all over again with a new character just to change the way you look. Fortunately, there is a way to change your character’s name and appearance later in the game by using the console. You can also use this to change your sex if you want, just don’t change your race!
D When he was forty-one years of age Wesley was described by Dr. Kennicott as being “neither tall nor fat. … His black hair, quite smooth and parted very exactly, added to a peculiar composure in his countenance, showed him to be an uncommon man.” Tyerman says, “In person Wesley was rather below the middle size, but beautifully proportioned, without an atom of superfluous flesh; yet muscular and strong, with a forehead clear and smooth, a bright penetrating eye, and a lovely face, which retained the freshness of its complexion to the latest period of his life.”
E Hello, I was wondering does anyone know if it’s possible to get the Cleric armour appearance from the character creation screen? I’ve found that you can get ones similar to it by buying or finding half plates that have the full plate icon, but I haven’t found the exact appearance so far. It’s the one with the chain robe and the armoured shoulders and neck piece with the tabard over the top, it’s really a driving incentive for me to find this armour if possible, also does anyone know if the Paladin armour from the character creation screen exists in the game? I play on the Sarlona server and my character is named Grimand Oathhammer, if anyone has either of these armours and they are sellable, would they be willing to sell or trade with me?
F If you are good, personality comes naturally. No matter what color, race or religion you belong to, if you are a good human being, you will never be alone. All you need is to believe in what you do, and do it with complete dedication, honesty and love. And, your efforts will be rewarded. If you are good at something, believe in your talent, don’t look back. If you want to, you can! This is the kind of confidence, you get when you believe in your strengths and values. Every individual is a different package and everyone has a personality.
G Appearance speaks a lot for you than personality. For instance when you appear for an interview, the interviewer will judge your appearance before he gets to know your personality. Suppose you are meeting your potential in-laws for the first time, you are dressed in a dirty jeans, sandals and shaggy hair, believe me you will not a get a wife! You need to look presentable for you to be taken seriously. First of all from the description above, you will be expressing yourself as a disorganized person. I think appearance is very important.

Why Some Don’t Care About Their Appearance
Despite the extremely superficial nature of this society there are still people who are able to avoid the notion that you have to adapt to a particular standard of beauty mainly because they are comfortable in their own skin. To outsiders it might appear that these individuals don’t care at all what they look like when the reality is that they simply have different priorities, and so even if their appearance doesn’t feature very highly on their list it doesn’t mean that they give no consideration to their appearance whatsoever.
For some individuals appearance is extremely important because it gives them an edge. They may already feel confidence when they are with colleagues and friends, but looking good gives them the extra boost they need.
Other people don’t attribute that much importance to appearances, especially if they have a laid-back attitude, are confident in themselves, and don’t have a job which requires power-dressing. This doesn’t mean they don’t care about their appearance; just that they have better things to do with their time than dressing up when all they are going to do is sit behind a desk all day.
Some people do care about their appearance, although it may not look that way to others. There are individuals who possess their own unique sense of style, which might entail showing off their tattoos and piercings, as well as wearing clothes which don’t seem to go together and look rather scruffy. However, these individuals may well belong to their own ‘tribe’ and this is their uniform. As far as their fellow ‘members’ are concerned they are one of them, and are dressed to reflect this. The rest of the world might think these individuals don’t care about their appearance, but usually the opposite is true.
Of course, there are those who really don’t care what they look like, and usually justifiably so. If you’re homeless, have a drink or drug problem, or a mental health issue, you can be forgiven for not making your appearance a priority.
Unfortunately, everybody is judged by their appearance in this society, so that if you don’t fit in with what is expected you are usually written off as being a bit weird. Everybody has their ups and downs, though, and surely nobody spends every second of their life trying to look their best. There are occasions when you’re sick or are grieving and feel down, so that the last thing on your mind is your appearance. Only the people closest to you are able to judge if you are ‘yourself’ or not, though, since strangers see you for a split second without comprehending how you are feeling at any given moment.
Most people do care about their appearance when they are in good spirits and things are going well in their life because they want to demonstrate that they belong to this society, which generally means conforming to certain standards in terms of their appearance. There may be some who decide to ignore convention, but these tend to be in the minority, while very few individuals don’t care at all what others think about the way they look.

Задание С1
Dear Maurice,
I’m happy to receive a letter from you. I hope everything’s ok. It may be right to show only beautiful people on TV as you think. They really look attractive and may enlarge the audience of the programme. But it may turn out that good looks are the only thing they have. But that is not enough for a good show to be the best.
As for your party it is a chance for you to check whether appearance is everything or not. Anyway you should wear something you find beautiful, some smart dress, but no champagne. It can only spoil everything.
See you soon,
Maurice.
