Summerhill School

What will you do if your teacher says that you can have a lesson or go home? In fact, in Summerhill School teachers really do it. Summerhill is the oldest children’s democracy in the world. It is, maybe, the most famous ‘free’ school. This school in Suffolk (the United Kingdom) is a very special place. Trees and grass, meadows and playing fields give children a good chance to play games, to do sports. Children don’t wear uniform there, they can play as much as they want. They also do a lot of project work.

A man called A. S. Neill opened this school in 1921. Neill knew well what kinds of problems many children have at school and he believed he could help them feel free. So each child there can choose what he wants in life. The children at Summerhill decide themselves if they want to have lessons or not. It is strange, but most of them do. They often come from schools at which they were unhappy and didn’t want to do any work at all. But at Summerhill they usually decide that to have classes is more interesting than not to have them. Like in most other schools, the children study different subjects. At the beginning of a term each student gets a timetable, on which they write the lessons they want to have. Another unusual thing about Summerhill is the meetings. There teachers and students discuss the school rules two times a week. If a teacher wants to tell everyone about a student’s bad behavior, he can do it at the meeting. A student can also say what he dislikes about a teacher. At the meetings children can listen, think and make decisions about their own lives.

Five Ways to Reach a Healthy Weight.

Regular physical activity burns calories and builds muscle – it helps you to look and feel good and keep fit. Walking the family dog, cycling to school, and doing other things for your daily activity can all make a difference. If you want to burn more calories, add some strength exercises to build muscle. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even when you aren’t exercising.

Fruit and vegetables are about more than just vitamins and minerals. They’re also packed with fibre, which means they fill you up. And when you eat fruit and vegetables, you’re less likely to overeat when it comes to high-calorie foods like chips or cookies.

Sizes of portions have increased over the past 10 years, and it means extra calories. Another important key factor in weight gain is that more people drink sugary beverages such as sodas, juice drinks, and energy drinks. So choose smaller portions and drink water or law-fat milk instead of soda.

One reason people do less exercises these days is because of spending more time watching TV, looking at the computer, or playing video games.

Breakfast gives you energy to do more during the day. People who don’t have breakfast often feel so hungry that they eat more later on. So they get more calories than if they eat breakfast.

  1. Physical activity is only good for burning calories.

Shopping in London

London has many large department stores, which sell everything: shoes, paper and perfume, fur courts and frying pans. The most expensive department store is Harrods in Knightsbridge. You can buy almost anything in Harrods, and you know you are getting the best. Twice a year, in January and July, Harrods has a “sale”. Some things are almost half-price, and there are thousands of bargains (скидки). But on the first days of the sale the shop is very crowded. Some people stand and wait all night so they can be first in the shop when it opens.

The smartest and most expensive shops are in Knightsbridge, but more people come to Oxford Street, London’s most popular shopping centre. The street is more than a mile long. There are several big department stores in Oxford Street. The best known are Selfridges, John Lewis and D.H. Evans. Oxford Street has the most shops, but in some ways King’s Road in Chelsea is more fun. This is where fashionable young Londoners buy their clothes in many small “boutiques”.

You can buy what you like in the big shops, but the small markets have a lot to offer too. There are several big street markets in London, and many small ones. Some markets are open only one day a week. Go to the Portobello on Saturday, or to Petticoat Lane on Sunday. Covent Garden market is open every day. Come here for antiques, old clothes, hand-made jewelry and many other things.

Pauline says, “I’m working with other people here to protect the coral reefs in the sea near Belize. The reefs here are beautiful, but if the sea water is very polluted, the coral dies. I’m helping to do research on the coral and the fish that live around the reefs. All over the world, coral reefs are dying. We need to do something about the problem before it’s too late.

I’m staying with a family here and I help with the cooking and the cleaning. I don’t get any money, but that’s OK. 2. Funny Charity ___ 5. A Nicknamed Politician ___

3. Bad-tempered Reptiles ___ 6. A Sea Center ___

A. Aberdeen Maritime Museum is situated on the historic Shiprow in the heart of the city of Aberdeen, near the harbor. The museum tells the story of the city’s long relationship with the North Sea. Collections cover shipbuilding, fast sailing ships, fishing and port history, and displays on the North Sea oil industry. The collection includes ship plans and photographs from the major shipbuilders of Aberdeen. Displays show ships and oil rig models, paintings, and “North Boats” material, fishing, whalers and trawlers, the North Sea oil industry, and the marine environment.

B. In 1988 the “Comic Relief” charity organization introduced a new festival to the British culture – Red Nose Day. The event takes place in the spring every second year and is often treated as a semi-holiday, with, for example, schools having non-uniform days. As the name suggests, the day involves wearing of plastic/foam red noses which are available, in exchange for a donation, from many shops. All the money goes to support starving children in Africa and people with AIDS. Many pop stars take part in this festival, they sell their things and possessions at auctions and give the money to “Comic Relief”. Once even Queen Elizabeth II took part in the festival chatting with common people at a pub.

C. Margaret Thatcher is a British politician, who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. She is the first and the only woman to hold either post. Thatcher’s tenure as Prime Minister was the longest continuous period in office since the tenure of Lord Liverpool who was Prime Minister in the early 19th century. She was the first woman to lead a major political party in the UK, and the first of only three women to have held any of the four great officers of state. Among other things, she defiantly opposed the Soviet Union, and her tough-taking rhetoric gained her the nickname the “Iron Lady”. She currently has a life peerage as Baroness Thatcher, of Kesteven in the County of Lincolnshire, which entitles her to sit in the House of Lords.

D. The Venus fly trap is a very interesting example of a carnivorous plant. Most plants get their nutrients from the soil only, but the Venus fly trap is able to get them from the soil and any unfortunate insects that land in its trap. When an insect lands in the trap, the trap closes and the insect is slowly dissolved. The ability of the trap to detect a victim and close is a mystery since Venus fly traps do not have nervous system of any sort. The digestive process typically takes a week or two, after which the trap opens and expels the leftover exoskeleton, which cannot be fully digested.

E. Anacondas in the wild spend most of their time in rivers hunting for their food. They are solitary creatures that are thought to be somewhat shy and not many of them are easily seen. They are very well camouflaged in the swamps in which they live. There are some historical reports of early giant anacondas up to 110 feet long and some of the native peoples of the South American jungle have reported seeing anacondas up to 50 feet long, although there has been no recorded evidence of anacondas of those sizes having been caught. Anacondas have a reputation for poor character. That and the massive size mean that anacondas are less popular as pets than other boas.
