The Christmas Tree

No one knows for sure who decorated the first Christmas tree. The custom of bringing an evergreen tree indoors and decorating it at Christmas started in Germany. One legend says that Martin Luther started the practice. Luther was an important Christian leader. According to the story, he noticed the starlit sky as he walked home one Christmas Eve about the year 1513. He thought the stars looked as if they were shining on the branches. When he arrived home, Martin Luther placed a small fir tree inside his house. He decorated it with lighted candles.

Decorating Christmas trees became popular in Germany. Prince Albert of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha, the German husband of Queen Victoria, took the tradition to England. Both German and English people brought it to America. And now nearly every family in Great Britain and the USA has a Christmas tree.

Since school is the place where you spend a good part of your day, it’s a good idea to have a few rules regarding classroom etiquette in mind.

To begin with, it’s always nice to greet your teacher and the other students when you walk into the classroom. If you go to class after the lesson has already started, it’s polite to apologise to your teacher. During the lesson, you need to respect your classmates, as well as your teacher. That means you should pay attention to others when they’re speaking to the whole class, and you shouldn’t talk to those next to you while the teacher is trying to explain something.

Of course, all this doesn’t mean that the classroom environment needs to be strict and boring. Your teacher will certainly appreciate it if you have something funny to share with the rest of the class. Also, if you have any fresh and creative ideas about a class project or trip, your teacher will be more than willing to hear about them. After all, teachers run out of ideas too! Remember, teachers were once students themselves, and they know very well that every now and then, the class needs to do something different from their usual routine and, above all, they know that learning should be fun!

6. You should never talk when entering the class. …….

7. If you are late, you need to bring a note from your parents. …….

Five Ways to Reach a Healthy Weight.

Regular physical activity burns calories and builds muscle – it helps you to look and feel good and keep fit. Walking the family dog, cycling to school, and doing other things for your daily activity can all make a difference. If you want to burn more calories, add some strength exercises to build muscle. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even when you aren’t exercising.

Fruit and vegetables are about more than just vitamins and minerals. They’re also packed with fibre, which means they fill you up. And when you eat fruit and vegetables, you’re less likely to overeat when it comes to high-calorie foods like chips or cookies.

Sizes of portions have increased over the past 10 years, and it means extra calories. Another important key factor in weight gain is that more people drink sugary beverages such as sodas, juice drinks, and energy drinks. So choose smaller portions and drink water or law-fat milk instead of soda.

One reason people do less exercises these days is because of spending more time watching TV, looking at the computer, or playing video games.

Breakfast gives you energy to do more during the day. People who don’t have breakfast often feel so hungry that they eat more later on. So they get more calories than if they eat breakfast.

1. Physical activity is only good for burning calories.

2. Cycling burns more calories than strength exercises.

3. Fruit and vegetables fill your stomach and give vitamins to your body.

4. If you eat a lot vegetables, you won’t feel like eating sweet things.

5. Portions used to be bigger in the past.

6. The more you eat for breakfast the hungrier you are later during the day.

 V. Find the right translation of the sentences.

1. She was given flowers by Steve.                    2. The doctor sent Mary for the medicine.

    a) Ей подарил цветы Стив.                           а) Доктор отправил Мэри за лекарством.

    b) Она подарила цветы Стива.                     b) За доктором отправили Мэри в медицинский центр.

    William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564, in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon. His father, John Shakespeare, was a glove-maker and wool-dealer.
William went to the local free grammar school where he studied Latin. At the age of 18 Shakespeare married a local girl, Anne Hathaway.
Those days there were not a lot of theatres in towns and actors and actresses had to travel moving from one place to another with their shows. Sometimes they visited Stratford-on-Avon. William liked to watch them. He was fond of their profession and he decided to become an actor.
He went to London and there he became an actor. At that time he began to write plays too. Shakespeare was at the same time an actor and a playwright. In his works he reflected events of his contemporaries’ life. His plays were staged in many theatres, translated into many foreign languages. That made Shakespeare very popular.

Shakespeare wrote history plays such as «Henry IV» and «Richard III», comedies such as «A Midsummer Night’s Dream» and «A Comedy of Errors». Shakespeare’s early tragedy is «Romeo and Juliet».

«Hamlet» is probably the most popular, the best-known of all Shakespeare’s plays. It is a very philosophical play. Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, is a highly intelligent person. Hamlet’s words are very famous: «To be, or not to be; that is the question…»
Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603 and was succeeded by James VI of Scotland, son of Mary Stuart. James, who became James I of England and Scotland, was a lover of the theatre.
Shakespeare wrote a tragedy «Macbeth» in which action passes in Scotland. In 1606 Shakespeare was a very mature and successful playwright.
         Between 1608 and 1613, Shakespeare wrote five plays: «Pericles» «Cymbeline», «The Winter’s Tale», «The Tempest» and «Henry VIII». In «The Tempest» Shakespeare says farewell to the theatre, to his friends.
On June 29, 1613, the Globe theatre was destroyed in a fire. For Shakespeare and his colleagues it must have been a terrible time. The Globe was the greatest theatre in England. He wrote thirty seven plays at all. He had connections with the best English theatres for about 25 years.

Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616.
