Time for coffee
The story of coffee drinking is one of the greatest and most fascinating in history. Millions of coffee drinkers worldwide cannot imagine life without a cup of aromatic coffee in the morning. Coffee is a natural stimulant which makes us feel more awake, alert and ready to concentrate.
The qualities of mocca, as coffee was once known, were first discovered in Ethiopia more than one thousand years ago. However, it was not Africans but Turks and Arabs who actively encouraged coffee drinking. The habit of coffee drinking quickly spread throughout the Arab world, where coffee won a reputation as the wine of Islam.
Coffee was first grown in Yemen. It was popular with Turks who served the drink to Italian merchants. In 1615 traders from Venice brought coffee to Europe, where it was originally sold as a medicine. By the end of the sixteenth century coffee was drunk in major European cities from Paris to London. Now, around the world there are different methods of preparing coffee, for example, in Turkey coffee is traditionally boiled three times while Italians are the inventors of espresso and cappuccino.

Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls is located between Southern Ontario (Canada) and New York State (USA). The first inhabitants who settled in the Niagara Falls region were the Iroquois. They worked as farmers and trades along the banks of the Niagara River. When the first Europeans set foot in the area, they also settled there. The 19th century brought the most important developments to the area. The Village of Manchester (Niagara Falls) became an important center for manufacturing companies during the early years of the industrial development. Tourists started to arrive in the 1820s and they still visit this after almost two centuries.
The most comfortable way to visit Niagara Falls is a boat trip on the world famous Maid of the Mist. This historical boat tour takes millions of tourists to the Falls from the Canadian to the American side every year. Don’t miss two other important attractions: the White Water Walk, an amazing tour through a deep narrow gorge and the Journey Behind the Falls, a self-guided tour which takes you to an observation platform at the base of the Falls in a lift. You can then go on a short journey through some tunnels which lead you behind the Falls.
After a day of exciting adventure, visit Niagara Square with all its shops, cinemas and boutiques. There are lots of restaurants that serve locally grown products and regional cuisine. At night, experience local clubs with live music and entertainment. Don’t forget the fireworks over the Falls every Friday and Sunday!

Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale’s parents were rich English land owners. Florence was born in Florence, Italy on 12 May 1820. Her parents named her after the city where she was born. Victorian women didn’t usually go to school but Florence’s father believed that women should get an education so he taught Florence and her older sister at home. they learned Italian, Latin, Greek, History and Maths.
As Florence grew up, she became interested in social problems. when she was twelve years old, she decided she wanted to do something useful with her life. She enjoyed visiting sick people in her neighbourhood.
Florence was extraordinary because most Victorian middle-class women didn’t have careers but Florence wanted to become a nurse. Her parents didn’t want her to become a nurse because nurses were usually working-class women. In fact, they didn’t want Florence to work at all, they wanted her to get married. However, her parents’ disapproval didn’t stop Florence doing what she wanted.
Florence went to Germany to learn about nursing. at that time nurses learned through experience, not through training. Florence looked after sick people, gave medicine out and helped during operations. She was very happy and she explained why: “we learned to think of our work, not ourselves.”
In 1854, Britain entered the Crimean war. Florence and a team of 38 nurses went to the Crimea to help the wounded soldiers. The military hospitals were dirty and badly organized. Florence made the hospitals clean and safe. The number of deaths in hospitals went down from 40% to 2%. Florence was kind and gentle with the soldiers. When she walked around the hospital at night she carried a lamp and that’s how she got the nickname “the Lady with the Lamp.”
After the war people from all over the world asked for her advice on designing hospitals. Florence thought nurses should learn through both experience and training. In 1860, she opened her training school for nurses. Today the Nightingale nurses still care for the sick and the poor.

Here is some information about pandas. Read the information and the statements below and circle T if the statement is true, F if the statement is false or U (unstated) if there is no such information in the text.
So rare is the giant panda that today there are thought to be only about 1000 individuals in the entire world. It is listed as an endangered species and has been seen in the wild only in the mountains of central China and eastern Tibet.
The name panda applies to either of two East Asian animals. Although they are sometimes considered to be relative, the giant panda is generally classified as a bear, and the lesser panda, also called the red, or common panda, is placed in the raccoon family.
The giant panda is about 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters) long from the tip of its nose to its rump, and it has a stubby tail. Adults weigh about 165 to 350 pounds (75 to 160 kilograms). They have a thick, woolly, white coat with black fur on the legs and ears. The animals are distinguished by black eye patches and a black band across the shoulders.
Giant pandas usually live alone in bamboo forests. They are mainly ground dwellers, using hollow trees, or rock crevices for shelter, but they can climb the trees as well. The giant panda feeds chiefly on bamboo shoots and roots, grasping the slender stems with the aid of a special tomblike structure on its front feet. They sometimes eat small animals.
Giant pandas are popular zoo animals, but they are extremely difficult to breed. In 1980 there were about 40 in captivity in China and about 13 in other countries. Su-Lin, first of the very few giant pandas to be exhibited in the West, reached the United States as an infant in 1936 and was a popular attraction at the Brookfield Zoo, near Chicago, III., until his death in 1938. In April 1972 the Chinese government sent two others, a male and a female, to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.
The lesser panda is found in China, Myanmar, Sikkim, and Nepal in high mountain forests and bamboo thickets. Because of its unusual catlike appearance, it is sometimes called a bear cat, or cat bear. The long, soft coat hairs are rusty red to dark chestnut. The face and ears are mostly white, but the backs of the ears are reddish brown.
The pandas travel in pairs or small family groups. Lesser pandas are known for their generally mild disposition. During the day this panda sleeps curled up in a tree with tail over its head or sitting on a limb with its head tucked under its chest and between its forelegs. It feeds at night, eating bamboo sprouts, grasses, fruits, other plant material, and, occasionally, small animals.
6) The giant panda should be protected.
7) Two pandas are of different families.
8) Red pandas live together with raccoons.
9) Giant pandas live in the holes in the ground.
10) It is not easy to grow pandas in the zoo.
11) There is special panda attraction in Chicago.
12) Su-Lin died in the zoo, because of his illness.
13) Pandas are night animals.
14) Some pandas look like raccoons, others have unusual catlike appearance.
15) Giant pandas and lesser pandas sleep in a different way.

Why do the Irish speak English?
By Fiana Griffen
Language identifies. ‘He speaks French so he is French.’ But the Irish speak English and
are certainly not English. When the Irish writer Samuel Beckett was asked whether he was
English, he answered ‘on the contrary’. Everyone agrees that the Irish are very unlike the
English. How did it come about that the Irish people speak a foreign language? Have they
no language of their own?
(1 _____ _____ ) The first official language of Ireland is Irish, but you could spend your
whole lifetime in Ireland and never hear anything but English in everyday conversation,
other than perhaps ‘slainte’ – the Irish toast. Public figures sometimes include a ‘cupla
focal’ – a few words – of Irish in their speeches. Out of a population of 3.6 million, no
more than 4 per cent still speak Irish daily, but Irish is a compulsory subject for school
children throughout their school years. What’s more, they must pass Irish in order to be
admitted to the National University of Ireland, or to work in the civil service and in many
other state jobs. Street names, signposts and destinations are all bilingual. The vast majority
of the population wishes to retain Irish in pride of place. So if they love the language so
much, why don’t the Irish speak Irish?
(2 _____ _____ ) The answers are found in history, which is largely determined by
geography. The Romans conquered most of the known world, but though they looked
across the sea to Ireland and claimed to be able to conquer it with one battalion, they never
did. The Germanic tribes who overran the mainland of Britain and laid the basis for modern
English didn’t bother to cross the Irish Sea. Norman warlords invaded England, then moved
on to Ireland in the twelfth century, but they were eventually assimilated into Irish culture
until they were ‘more Irish than the Irish themselves’.
(3 _____ _____) In the sixteenth century, King Henry VIII of England became concerned
that Ireland could be used as a ‘back door’ into England by France or Spain and feared it
could be persuaded to collaborate with his enemies. He decided that Ireland should conform
to England in every way and began a systematic conquest, continued by his daughter
Elizabeth I and succeeding monarchs. One of their priorities was the elimination of the Irish
language. Irish poets were jailed and a great number of manuscripts in Irish were destroyed.
(4 _____ _____ ) The struggle of ‘The Old Gaelic Order’ to survive lasted nearly 200
years, but by the end of the eighteenth century it was dead and the English victory was
complete. From that time on, all the affairs of the nation were conducted in English and
Irish became the language of the poor. The only book published in Irish was the Bible.
(5 _____ _____) Nowadays, the Irish continue to speak English and they learn Irish. There
is a famous Irish saying: ‘A country without a language is a country without a soul.’ The
Irish have two languages, their own which they hardly speak and English which is not
theirs, but by keeping the one and creatively using the other, perhaps they manage to hold
onto the soul of Ireland.

Task 1
SCRIPT
You will hear an expert giving a talk about blogs and blogging. First, you have some time to look at questions 1-10. As you listen, answer questions 1-10. You will hear the information twice. Now you have 1 minute to look at the task.
Pause 1 min
Now listen and answer Questions 1-10.
OK, I’m going to talk today about blogs and blogging. Though I’m assuming you’re all familiar with what a blog is, let’s just start with a definition. Perhaps the simplest definition is that a blog is a type of website in the form of a journal of one sort or another. It consists of posts — new material, or entries — that are arranged in chronological order, with the most recent post at the top of the page.
Now, what are the typical characteristics of a blog? Well, blogs are usually written by one person, they are usually updated regularly and they are often, though by no means always, about one particular topic. That topic might be the blogger’s own life, as many blogs are personal diaries. But there are blogs on just about any topic you could think of — there are political blogs, news blogs, blogs about a particular hobby, etc., etc.
Now, most blogs are not monologues, because they allow readers to make their own comments on what appears in the blog, or to add their own information to it. In this way, people get into contact with each other, learning from each ether, sharing ideas, perhaps making friends or even doing business with each other, wherever they are in the world.
Although blogs are very much part of modern life and there are literally millions of blogs on the web, the history of blogging is a pretty short one. There is some disagreement over what the first blog was, but many people reckon it was an online diary started by a student called Justin Hall in 1994. His site was called Justin’s Home Page, and he later called it Links From The Underground.
At that point, the word ‘blog’ didn’t exist. More websites like his started to spring up, in the form of regularly updated online journals on various subjects, with links to other websites and forums for people to contribute their personal opinions.
In 1997, someone called Jorn Barger first used the term ‘web log’ to categorise this kind of website, when he launched his own website, Robot Wisdom. In 1999, a blogger called Peter Merholz jokingly broke this word up into ‘we blog’ and therefore invented the term ‘blog’. Pretty soon, everyone called the sites ‘blogs’ and the people writing them ‘bloggers’.
Pause
OK, now let’s move on to how to run a blog, and what I’m going to do now is to tell you what I think is the best approach to workflow with a blog, First of all, you need to decide on the frequency of your blog posts. Some people do several a day, which is great if you can keep it up, others one a day. Once a week might be enough, but the key question is what the readers of your blog expect. They need to know when they can expect to see a new post on the blog, so whatever schedule you decide on, it’s important to stick to it.
When you’re going to do a post, start by reading material to find out what’s being discussed in friends’ blogs, or in other blogs related to the topic of yours. That way you can take these things into account to ensure that your blog is bang up to date.
Then start composing your blog post. If you’re doing one that involves research and links, open a file for storing the sources of your information and the links you’re going to put in the post. Also consider using pictures. These can make your blog much more attractive than one that’s just text. If you use photos from the web, make sure you cite the source in your blog.
When you’ve completed the post, add some tags. If you don’t have the kind of software that enables you to build them into the post, add them at the bottom. Tags are really important for searchability — they can get you new readers who find your blog via the tags.
If you think this is a particularly good post and you’re really proud of it, announce it by sending links to it on social networking sites, together with a very brief summary of what it’s about.
Then check your blog statistics to see how many people are reading and responding to your blog. Find out who’s blogged about your post and reply to them, and give them a proper reply rather than just saying thanks.
After you’ve done all that, get off your own blog and comment elsewhere. Remember that you’re not the only person blogging and putting out new material — there are lots of others doing the same and you should show them some respect by giving them comments and feedback on their posts where you feel it’s appropriate.
Well, that’s just some advice on being a good blogger. Blogging’s obviously a major thing now in the world of electronic media and it’s anybody’s guess how it will develop in the future.

Task 2
SCRIPT
You are going to hear a supervisor talking to the new staff at a large hospital. First you have some time to look at questions 11-15. As you listen, answer questions 11-15. You will hear the information twice. Now you have 30 seconds to look at the task.
Pause 30 seconds
Now listen to the talk and choose the correct answers for questions 11-15.
Good afternoon. My name’s Debbie Green and I’m going to give you a short but hopefully interesting introduction to working at this hospital. I’ll start with some guidelines about nutrition and fitness … er, because a hospital environment can be stressful, and so we always encourage our staff to stay fit and have a healthy lifestyle. So … just a few tips first. As you know, the key to good health is eating what we call ‘a balanced diet’; many people don’t do this, however. For one thing, they don’t eat enough fruit, and vegetables or home-prepared food. When you feel hungry, it’s often too easy to grab something quick, because you’re tired or busy. Cooking a healthy meal takes longer, and this is often why people live on sandwiches and fast food instead. Please — don’t fall into this unhealthy trap.
Of course, you have to do a little exercise and keep fit as well. I know you’ll have a lot of work and may not have time to join a gym … but consider how often you take the lift, rather than the stairs, or how often you drive rather than walk. Health wise, it may just be a question of doing things differently, rather than starting a very active sport.
In fact, being generally active is much healthier than doing lots of exercise just occasionally. As you know, this can be as risky for your heart as being inactive! As long as you do at least an hour’s exercise a day — and some of you will do more than that at work — you’ll find that you don’t lie awake at night worrying about the next day — and that’s the main advantage of exercise. Remember — this is a hospital, and you are supposed to be the healthiest people here!
Moving on to health and safety, I want to point out that it’s quite OK to take a break any time that you’re not busy. We know that when there’s an emergency you may have to miss that cup of tea or coffee in the canteen or wherever you go, but generally you shouldn’t work for more than three hours without a break, otherwise your attention levels will drop and you could then make a careless mistake.
Another important issue is hygiene. You’re all trained to clean your hands at work, but remember that germs can live for a long time, so please make sure that you don’t leave even a small amount of rubbish around … there are brooms in the cupboards, so use them. We do have cleaners, but they aren’t always here when you need them, I’m afraid, and a little dirt can soon build up.

Task 1
Questions 1 — 7 are based on a newspaper article about Robin Hood. Seven sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A-I the one which fits into each gap (1-7). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use. There is an example at the beginning (0).
Who was Robin Hood?

B
Stories and rhymes about a band of robbers led by a man called Robin Hood have been popular for over 600 years. Five hundred years ago, a man called Wynken de Worde collected the rhymes together and printed a book about Robin Hood’s life. Since then, thousands of other books have been based on the rhymes — as well as television programmes, films and computer games. The Robin Hood stories were certainly very popular with King Henry VIII, who ruled England at the start of the 16th century. Henry was a child when the stories first appeared in print, but they fascinated him for the rest of his life. 1……………………………..
After all this time it is hard to tell how the stories began. Some people think that Robin Hood is a fictional character; others think he really lived, and they argue about which part of England he was from. 2………………………. The idea that they were stealing from rich folk to give to the poor has saved them from being branded as villains. They certainly chose their victims carefully, sparing the poor and picking on those who were wealthy and proud.
3………………………..A porter is someone who has to do fetching and carrying work, and the idea fits in badly with all the other stories about his life and character. Enthusiasts prefer to believe that he spent the whole of his life in the woods. They say that most of the stories about him are perfectly true − but not this particular episode. 4………………………………. On the other hand, they cannot explain why anyone would ever invent such a story, which ruins the whole Robin Hood romance.
5………………………….They have studied Edward II’s accounts, which show the wages he paid to his workers — including a porter called Robin Hood. In November 1324, Hood received his final payment: ‘five shillings because he could no longer work’. 6…………………………..If so, Robin Hood was a genuine outlaw who lived in the reign of Edward II. His career of crime was apparently brought to a sudden end when he was captured and made to work as a servant 7…………………………
A Historians have tried to check the facts by looking for clues in all sorts of places.
В All these things have spread his fame throughout the world.
С One story says that Hood was captured and made to work as a porter at the court of King Edward II.
D According to the stories, Robin Hood and his men were thieves who pounced on wealthy travellers in lonely woods.
E They prefer the idea of a Robin Hood who was free and defiant from birth until death.
F Even as a child he probably played with a bow and arrow, pretending that he was Hood the robber!
G We cannot be sure that this is the famous Robin Hood but it seems very likely.
H As a man he sometimes wore Robin Hood costumes for dances and May Day celebrations.
I Finally pensioned off in old age, his life did not quite match up to the stories.

I READING
Read the text and choose from the sentences A-F the one which fits each gap (1-5). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use.
In the swamplands and along the river banks of the Amazon and the Orinoco there lives a bird that swims before it can fly, flies like a fat chicken, eats green leaves, has the stomach of a cow and has claws on its wings when young. (1) …… It is called the hoatzin.
(2) …… Male and female look very much alike with brown on the back and cream and rusty red underneath. The head is small, with a large crest on the top, bright red eyes, and electric blue skin. Its nearest relatives are the cuckoos. Its most remarkable feature, though, is not found in the adult but in the young.
Baby hoatzins have a claw on the leading edge of each wing and another at the end of each wing tip. Using these four claws, together with the beak, they can clamber about in the undergrowth, looking very much like primitive birds must have done. The hoatzin, however, could not be considered primitive. (3) ……
During the drier months between December and March hoatzins fly about the forest in flocks containing 20-30 birds, but in April, when the rainy season begins, they collect together in smaller breeding units of two to seven individuals. (4) ……
When danger threatens, in the form of a snake or a monkey, the young hoatzins – maybe three in one nest – dive over the side and into the river. (5) …… When they have learned to fly they lose their claws and escape predators not by swimming but by flapping off, in a rather ungainly fashion, to a neighboring tree.
A | They build their nests about 4.6m above the river, an important feature for the survival of the young.
|
B | Another peculiarity of the chick is its ability to swim well if it falls into water.
|
C | It would not be out of place in Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland, but it is real.
|
D | They swim about under the water until it is safe to return and then, using their claws, haul themselves up through the branches and back to the nest.
|
E | In appearance, the adult looks like a cross between a domestic chicken and a secretary bird.
|
F | It is a highly specialized bird.

Task 1.
Read the text and questions 1‐5 below. For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D.
My home is a windmill
by Josh Summers, aged 14
My home’s different from where my friends live because I live in a19th century windmill! My parents saw it one day, and bought it. It was in poor condition, but it was repaired and now it’s fantastic!
The windmill was once used to make flour from corn. The corn store used to be downstairs, where our kitchen is now, and horses came there to deliver the corn. The enormous 20‐metre sails are still on the front, but they don’t turn in the wind like they used to because it’s too dangerous, so birds live in them instead. There’s always a ladder up the side of the windmill so that dad can paint it and keep it a nice cream colour. He also cleans the windows, although a company comes to do the top ones as the ladder’s too short.
Inside it’s like a tent with six sides, and it becomes more pointed towards the top, so the rooms get smaller. My room’s under the roof and I get a fantastic view – it’s like looking out of an airplane window. There are some other houses around now, and a new main road, but I can relax and make a noise when I play my guitar up there and no one can hear me! I can hear everything, though, like the birds when it’s quiet, which is really calming, or the very loud storms, which I can see coming towards us. And I actually find it easier to concentrate on my school work up there, as my brothers and sisters don’t want to climb up all the stairs, so they don’t disturb me! I can’t imagine living anywhere else!
1. What is Josh trying to do in the text?
A compare his home with his friends
B explain why his family chose to live in their current home
C tell readers about advantages of living where he does
D suggest how his home could be improved
2. What does Josh say about the outside of the windmill?
A Wild creatures have made their homes there.
B It’s covered in dark paint.
C There’s a ladder that goes right to the top.
D The windows frequently need cleaning.
3. Josh says that his room
A is a bit like an aeroplane inside.
B is a good place for practicing a musical instrument.
C is the largest one in the windmill.
D is better for relaxing in than doing school work.
4. What does Josh say about the different sounds he hears in the windmill?
A He dislikes the noise of the sails in the wind.
B He enjoys listening to all the birds.
C He feels nervous when a loud storm comes along.
D He’s pleased that he’s not disturbed by any noise.
5. What would a visitor from the 19th century say if they saw the windmill now?
A It’s great that they’ve kept the corn store as it was. The horses used to love coming
there.
B The sails are a lot smaller than they used to be. I suppose that’s for safety reasons.
C It’s still in the same condition as before. The owners never looked after it then, either.
D You can still see the windmill from miles away. Of course, there weren’t all these
buildings around it then, as a busy road going past.
Task 2.
Read the text and mark statements 6‐12 below as T (true) or F (false).
On 2 November 1982, the British public turned on their television sets for the arrival of the nation’s fourth TV station, called Channel 4. They were greeted by the smiling face of local TV news presenter Richard Whiteley, who welcomed them with the words: ‘As the countdown to a new channel ends, a brand new countdown begins.’ And with this sentence, the words and numbers game show ‘Countdown’ was launched.
The rules of this new game show were as follows: two contestants faced each other over several
rounds of games with letters and with numbers. Finally, there was the Conundrum round, where
contestants had to work out the nine‐letter anagram. At the end of the show, the contestant with the highest score won and was invited back the next day to face a new challenger.
However, despite the simplicity of the rules, those who watched the early editions of the 30‐minute show, which was on five days a week, could hardly have imagined that it would last any longer than the original seven weeks that had been planned for it. The first contestants and guests were not exactly the most exciting people on television.
But luckily for ‘Countdown’, there were enough old people, university students and other people with nothing much to do each afternoon to keep the show alive. When the show began, Carol Vordermanwon over fans with her amazing mathematical abilities. ’Countdown’ made a celebrity out of Carol, and these days she’s a familiar face on British TV. Despite her fame, Carol still loyally turned up on ‘Countdown’ each day to turn over the letters and show the contestants how to solve the numbers game until she retired in 2008.
Yes, that is correct – nearly 30 years since it began, ‘Countdown’ continues to keep its audience’s brains working every afternoon. In fact, on 3 January 2006, it celebrated its 4,000th show. Other signs of its success include the increase in the length of each programme to 45 minutes, the addition of a show on Saturdays and the number of British celebrities who have made an appearance.
6. ‘Countdown’ was the first programme ever shown on Channel 4. ……………
7. Every day two new contestants compete to become ‘Countdown’ champion. ……………
8. Originally only 35 programmes of ‘Countdown’ were planned. ……………
9. The early shows were popular with working people. ……………
10. Carol Vorderman is no longer involved with the show. ……………
11. These days ‘Countdown’ is on for four and a half hours every week. ……………
12. More and more famous people like turning up on the programme. ……………
